How to Stop Mouth Breathing at Night: A Step-by-Step Guide

Waking up with dry mouth every morning? Here's the step-by-step protocol to retrain nasal breathing at night — what works, what doesn't, and how long it takes.

The short answer

To stop mouth breathing at night, first clear your nose (saline rinse + nasal strip), then close your mouth gently with sleep mouth tape. Most people convert to full nasal-only sleep within 2–4 weeks. If your nose is structurally blocked (deviated septum, polyps), see an ENT first.

Step 1: Confirm your nose actually works

Pinch one nostril, breathe through the other for 30 seconds, swap. Both should feel clear. If either side feels blocked, address that first — saline rinse, nasal strip, or ENT review for a deviated septum.

Step 2: Open the nasal airway nightly

Apply a nasal strip 10 minutes before bed. This widens the nasal valve so nasal-only breathing is comfortable, not effortful.

Step 3: Close the mouth gently with tape

Use purpose-made sleep mouth tape — a small horizontal strip across the centre of the lips. You can still breathe and speak around it. Never use duct or athletic tape.

Step 4: Sleep on your side

Side-sleeping reduces tongue collapse and makes it easier to maintain a closed mouth all night.

Step 5: Train your daytime breathing too

The body remembers the breathing pattern you use during the day. Practice nasal-only breathing while walking, working at your desk, and exercising. After 2–3 weeks it becomes automatic at night too.

What to expect week by week

  • Week 1: Tape may feel weird; you'll wake more aware of your mouth.
  • Week 2: Dry mouth gone; snoring quieter.
  • Week 3–4: Nasal-only breathing starts to feel default.
  • Week 6+: Most people can drop the tape entirely if the nose is clear.

Who should not tape

Untreated sleep apnoea, head cold, severe nasal obstruction, after drinking alcohol, or under 18. See our mouth-taping safety guide for the full list.
