What are nasal strips?

Nasal strips — also called nose strips, breathing strips, or nose tape — are adhesive bands with one or two flexible spring ribs. When you press a strip across the bridge of your nose, the springs try to return to flat, gently pulling the soft cartilage on the sides of your nostrils outward. That widens the external nasal valve, the narrowest part of your airway, and reduces the work your lungs have to do to pull air through.

Independent research has measured the effect: external nasal dilator strips increase nasal valve cross-sectional area by roughly 25%, lowering inspiratory resistance enough to reduce snoring intensity and improve perceived nasal airflow during both sleep and exercise.

They are drug-free, latex-free, and considered a Class I medical device in Australia. Every batch of RhinoGear nasal strips is listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG 508285).

How they work

One small lift, four big changes.

Wider airway

Spring band lifts soft cartilage and opens the external nasal valve.

Quieter sleep

Less turbulence at the valve = less vibration = less snoring.

Easier training

Lower nasal resistance during cardio, BJJ, lifting and recovery.

Better oxygen uptake

Nasal breathing produces nitric oxide — improves O₂ efficiency 10–20%.

Who they're for

Built for sleepers, athletes and anyone with a stuffy nose.

Snorers & restless sleepers

If your snoring is the soft, breathy kind that comes from your nose narrowing as you fall asleep, a nasal strip is usually the simplest fix. Pair with mouth tape for full nose-only breathing.

Sleep & snoring

Runners, cyclists & lifters

Lower nasal resistance means more airflow at the same effort. Many endurance athletes use strips during Zone 2 work to train nasal-only breathing.

Training & recovery

Allergy & blocked-nose sufferers

When swelling narrows your airway from the inside, mechanically pulling the outside open partially compensates. Drug-free, no rebound congestion.

Application

How to apply a nasal strip in 30 seconds.

  1. 01

    Clean & dry

Wash the bridge of your nose and dry it thoroughly. Oils and moisturiser stop the adhesive bonding.

  2. 02

    Centre & press

Peel the strip from its liner. Centre it horizontally across the bridge, just above the flare of your nostrils — not over the bony part. Press firmly for 20 seconds.

  3. 03

    Wear up to 12 hours

Sleep, train or work. The strip stays put through sweat and pillow contact.

  4. 04

    Remove with warm water

In the morning, wet a flannel with warm water and hold over the strip for 10 seconds before peeling slowly. Never rip dry.

Nasal strips are not a treatment for sleep apnoea.

If you wake up gasping, stop breathing in your sleep, or feel exhausted despite a full night's rest, see a GP for a sleep study. Nasal strips are a comfort and breathing aid, not a medical device for OSA.

Common questions

Nasal strips FAQ.

Do nasal strips actually work?+

Yes — peer-reviewed studies show external nasal strips increase the cross-sectional area of the external nasal valve by roughly 25%, reducing inspiratory airway resistance. The effect is strongest for people whose noses narrow at the soft cartilage on the side of the nostrils, which is the majority of snorers and athletes.

Where do you put nasal strips?+

Centre the strip horizontally across the bridge of the nose, just above the flare of your nostrils — not over the bony part. Press for 20 seconds so the adhesive grips. The spring band should sit on the soft cartilage where it can pull outward.

How do I apply a nasal strip correctly?+

Wash and fully dry the bridge of the nose so the adhesive bonds. Peel the strip from its liner, centre it just above the nostrils, and press firmly for 20 seconds. Wear up to 12 hours, then remove gently with warm water — never rip dry.

Are nasal strips safe?+

External nasal strips are a Class I medical device, considered low-risk for healthy adults. RhinoGear strips are TGA-listed (ARTG 508285) in Australia with a hypoallergenic, latex-free acrylic adhesive. They are not a treatment for sleep apnoea — see a GP if you suspect that.

How are nasal strips different from nose tape or mouth tape?+

Nasal strips (also called nose strips) sit outside the nose and physically widen the nasal valve. Mouth tape sits across the lips and forces nasal-only breathing. They solve different problems and work brilliantly together — strips open the airway, tape keeps you using it.

Can I wear nasal strips every night?+

Yes. RhinoGear strips are designed for nightly use with a gentle adhesive that removes cleanly with warm water. If your skin gets irritated, alternate which side of the bridge you start the strip from, or take a night off.

Are nasal strips better than internal nasal dilators?+

For mild-to-moderate cases, external strips are easier and more comfortable for nightly use. Internal dilators (like Mute or Intake) deliver slightly more force at the valve but most users find them uncomfortable. See our nasal strips vs internal dilators guide.

Do nasal strips help with snoring?+

Yes for valve-related snoring (the soft tissue at the back of the nose vibrating). They will not help with throat-based snoring or sleep apnoea — take our snoring type quiz to identify which type you have.
