Mouth Tape
Does Mouth Tape Work? What the Evidence Actually Says
Mouth tape is everywhere on social media, but does it actually work? Here's what clinical studies, sleep dentists and real users say — and who should not use it.

The short answer
Mouth tape works for mouth-breathers. Studies show it can reduce snoring intensity, improve nasal breathing and cut morning dry mouth in people who sleep with an open mouth. It does not treat obstructive sleep apnoea or throat-level snoring, and it is unsafe for anyone with a blocked nose or untreated breathing disorder.
What mouth tape actually does
Mouth tape is a small adhesive strip worn across the lips during sleep. Its only job is to keep your mouth gently closed so air flows through your nose instead.
It does not open a blocked nose, reposition the jaw, or treat sleep apnoea. It simply removes the option to mouth-breathe, which for many people is enough to reduce snoring and dry mouth.
What the research says
- A 2015 study in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery found mouth taping reduced snoring and improved nasal breathing in mouth-breathers with mild sleep-disordered breathing.
- A 2022 systematic review noted mouth taping can improve snoring indices but stressed it is not a substitute for CPAP or professional OSA treatment.
- Dentists and myofunctional therapists commonly use mouth tape as part of nasal-breathing retraining, especially alongside tongue-posture exercises.

How long until you notice a difference
- Night 1–3: awareness of mouth position improves; dry mouth often drops immediately.
- Week 2: snoring is usually noticeably quieter if mouth-breathing was the cause.
- Week 3–4: nasal-only breathing starts to feel automatic for many users.
