Can I use mouth tape with a cold or blocked nose?

Updated 13 August 2026

Short answer

No. Mouth tape is only safe when your nose is clear enough to breathe through comfortably all night.

When your nose is fully blocked, your body needs the option to mouth-breathe. Taping the lips shut in that situation is uncomfortable and potentially unsafe.

Use a nasal strip or decongestant to open the airway first, and only add mouth tape once you can nasal-breathe reliably. Many customers pair the two once the cold passes.
