Mouth tape
Is mouth taping safe?
Updated 5 May 2026
Short answer
For healthy adults with a clear nose and no untreated sleep apnoea, properly designed sleep tape is considered low-risk. It is unsafe for the wrong user.
Do NOT mouth-tape if you have untreated obstructive sleep apnoea, a fully blocked nose, severe acid reflux, recent facial surgery, or you've been drinking heavily.
Use a tape designed for the lips — RhinoGear Gentle Mouth Tape uses a vertical centre-strip that leaves the corners of the mouth free. Avoid duct tape, washi tape and full-mouth seals.
Start with a 10-minute daytime trial, then a short nap, then a full night.
