Can you suffocate from mouth tape while sleeping?

Updated 13 August 2026

Short answer

No — not with a properly designed sleep tape. RhinoGear mouth tape leaves the corners of the mouth free and peels away under light pressure.

A purpose-made mouth tape is not a full mouth seal. The vertical centre-strip design means you can still breathe through the corners of your mouth, cough, speak or open your lips with gentle pressure.

If you ever feel uncomfortable, peel it off and breathe normally. Never use duct tape, packing tape or any industrial adhesive on your lips.
