Is mouth tape dangerous?
Updated 13 August 2026
Short answer
For healthy adults with a clear nose, no. It is unsafe for people with untreated sleep apnoea, a fully blocked nose, severe reflux, or after heavy drinking.
Mouth tape is generally low-risk for healthy adults who can breathe through their nose and remove the tape themselves.
Do not tape if you have untreated obstructive sleep apnoea, a severe cold or blocked nose, recent facial surgery, vomiting risk, or if you have been drinking heavily.
If you have a respiratory condition or are unsure, speak with your GP or sleep physician first.
